Osage Beach — By 2010, travelers on U.S. 54 approaching the Grand Glaize bridge will see a 15-story hotel rising up on a nearby peninsula, overlooking the Lake of the Ozarks.
And the chateau will bear the signature of John Q. Hammons, a famed Springfield hotelier who is expected to announce the plan for the project — his 14th property in Missouri — today.
The project, called Chateau on Lake of the Ozarks, Osage Beach, is estimated to cost $80 million to $90 million and will include a 320-room, European-style hotel with more than 100,000 square feet of meeting space.
The news, which the city has been anticipating for more than a year, excited local officials.
"It will be a huge benefit and boost to the city," said Nancy Viselli, Osage Beach’s city administrator. "(Hammons) builds gorgeous hotels."
Said Tim Jacobsen, executive director of the Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau: "It’s always positive about what John Q. Hammons will do to our community."
Baby boomers have been feeding the rapid growth in Osage Beach in recent years, said John Garrett, a local Realtor. He said his clients are almost exclusively those seeking a second home or a retirement adobe.
"There are just a lot of activities," Garrett said.
